Chapter Nine

Mason

“So where is this big music producer of yours?” Sam arched one brow.

My brother had called me to get together for lunch, and I was glad too. I needed to do something other than sit around, worrying about the concerts that loomed. “He had to fly back to Los Angeles.”

“But, shouldn’t he be here? How can he just arrange those big concerts, and then leave?”

“I’m sure he’ll come back before the actual first show.” I actually had no idea if Bain would be back in time. I sure as hell hoped so. I was scared and getting more scared by the day. He hadn’t called or texted me once in the three days he’d been gone. I’d continued going to the practices, but I could tell that even Harry and Evette seemed puzzled as to why Bain was MIA.

“Can you get out of your contract?”

I frowned. “I don’t want to get out of it.”

“But, the guy isn’t even helping you.”

Pushing down my impatience, I said calmly, “He’s only been gone three days. It’s not like he’s been gone a year.”

“Yeah, but these concerts are a big deal for you. He must know that.”

“They’re a big deal for him too. If I bomb, that can’t be good for his rep.” I sipped my Iced tea, feeling defensive.

“You’re supporting my argument. These upcoming concerts are a big deal for both of you, and yet, he’s nowhere to be seen.” He dipped a skinny fry in some ketchup, and shoved it in his mouth.

“He’ll be back soon. I’m sure of it.” I held on to that feeling, even though fear tried to tell me Bain had probably lost interest in me, and moved on to some other singer he’d spotted somewhere.

“I hope you’re using your head and not your heart in this situation.” Sam’s gaze was appraising.

My face warmed. “Not sure what you mean.”

“I don’t know. There’s just something about a look you get on your face when you mention the guy. It makes me uneasy.” He leaned forward. “You’d tell me if you were involved with this Bain, right?”

I swallowed hard. “Of course I’m involved with him.”

“I mean romantically.”

I gave an awkward laugh. “I’m not sleeping with him, if that’s what you mean. But if I was, I’m not sure you’re the first person I’d tell.”

His lips twitched. “I’m not saying I’d want details.”

“Good. Because you wouldn’t get any. If there were any. Which there aren't.”

He grinned. “Hey, before I forget, Caden wanted to invite you to dinner soon.”

“Sure.” I felt guilty that I’d neglected visiting my family lately. I’d been so wrapped up in Rudy and my music, I’d been focused inward. “I feel like I haven’t seen Taylor in ages. Is he driving yet?”

Wincing, Sam said, “Don’t even say that. They grow up so fast.”

“He’s what, two months old a most? I think you’re safe.”

Sam had a wistful expression. “Yeah.” He brightened. “I have some news.”

“Taylor is in college?”

He laughed. “Nope.” A sly smile spread across his face. “Caden is pregnant.
